Volcanic Ash
Volcanic Ash Preparedness
Volcanic eruptions can blanket entire regions with toxic ash, creating hazardous air quality, collapsing roofs, contaminating water, and disrupting all aspects of life for weeks or months.
Volcanic ash is not like snow—it's abrasive glass and rock particles that damage lungs, engines, and infrastructure. Even thin layers create dangerous conditions and can cause roof collapse when wet.
Understanding Volcanic Ash Threats
Volcanic ash causes severe respiratory problems, contaminates water supplies, damages vehicles and equipment, blocks sunlight, and accumulates weight that collapses structures. Ashfall can continue for days or weeks.
Key Preparedness Priorities
- N95 or P100 respirators (surgical masks are ineffective)
- Eye protection (goggles, not regular glasses)
- Plastic sheeting and tape to seal buildings
- Air filtration systems
- Water storage (ash contaminates water supplies)
- Food supplies (stores will close)
- Roof clearing tools and safety equipment
- Backup power (ash damages electrical systems)
- Vehicle protection (don't drive in heavy ashfall)
- Emergency lighting
