Heatwaves
Heatwave Preparedness
Extreme heat is one of the deadliest weather phenomena. Heatwaves can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and death, especially when combined with high humidity and power outages.
Heat kills more people annually than all other weather events combined. Vulnerable populations include the elderly, children, outdoor workers, and those without air conditioning.
Understanding Heatwave Threats
Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can overwhelm the body's ability to cool itself. When combined with power outages, lack of water, or physical exertion, heat becomes life-threatening within hours.
Key Preparedness Priorities
- Cooling supplies (fans, cooling towels, ice packs)
- Extra water storage (1 gallon per person per day minimum)
- Electrolyte replacement drinks
- Lightweight, breathable clothing
- Sun protection (hats, sunscreen, shade structures)
- Battery-powered fans if power fails
- Know cooling center locations in your area
